Our recently completed animated presentation for Hague Print saw us trying out a new funky plugin for After Effects called Element 3D, available from Video Copilot. I have found Video Copilot to be an amazing resource for After Effects tips, tutorials and scripts, but I think they have outdone themselves with this piece of software.

Element 3D allows you to import 3D object files into your timeline and manipulate them as... 3D objects! Rotate, texture animate and render... fully interactive with AE lights and cameras, you can even import .obj sequences to have baked animations play right on your timeline. This can save a lot of time -  where you might end up pre-rendering sequences in maya / max / etc. due to a change in the final composition perspective, or lighting or whatever, now you can just bring in the mesh and have everything update in After Effects. Brilliant!

We used Element 3D in the part of our animation showing the printing of cheques - the printer, stapler and cheques were all rendered in AE. It all worked very smoothly and we reckon we are going to be using it a lot more...
