How to keep people on your website
Information Architecture describes the process whereby information is hierarchically grouped so as to simplify its storage and access. In effect, this means content is grouped into categories that will be most useful for the user as they navigate the website, for example placing a particular resource where they are most likely to find it.
Being a synthesis of information architecture, usability, content and visual design, User Experience refers to the combined effect of these aspects on a visitor to the site.
Will they remember their visit favourably and return, perhaps becoming a frequent user, or will they encounter some frustration or dissatisfaction, leave, and advise their colleagues not to bother? Will a visitor see a mass of text and become confused, or will they see an ordered and pleasing structure that leads them to the information they require?
Of course the answers to these questions depend greatly on the personality and purpose of the visitor, but we can maximise the chances of generating favourable reactions by testing and optimising User Experience.
This means that information architecture and graphic design work hand in hand to satisfy the requirements of users.
